Krabi Lignite-Fired Power Plant is the first and only one power plant in the southern Thailand which uses lignite as fuel. The power plant consists of 3 units with total generating capacity of 60 MW. It supplied electricity since 1964, serving the electricity demand in the Lower South until it expired and was decommissioned from the system on September 30, 1995 after 31 years of operation.
On April 29, 1997, the new Krabi Power Plant was constructed at the former site. The power plant has started commercial operation in 2004 to enhance security of the power system in the South.
At present, Krabi Power Plant has improved its generation process to use palm oil and fuel oil in electricity generation in response to the government policy to support the low price of raw palm oil.
